Caring for a Mangave is quite simple. Mangaves need plenty of bright, indirect light to thrive. Preferably place them in a location with plenty of bright, indirect sunlight. Water the Mangave regularly, but make sure that the soil can dry thoroughly between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so make sure the soil is not constantly moist.
When repotting the Mangave, use a well-drained soil that is suitable for succulents. This helps prevent flooding and ensures good drainage.
Mangaves thrive best at temperatures between 10-25°C. However, they can also survive at lower temperatures, but avoid temperatures below 0°C.
Feed the Mangave lightly every few months with a balanced fertilizer. Follow the instructions on the package for the correct dosage.
If the leaves of the Mangave become damaged, you can carefully cut away the leaves. Use a sharp and clean knife to cut the leaves.
The Mangave is a hybrid plant that originated from a cross between the Agave and the Manfreda. The Agave is a succulent plant found mainly in Mexico and the southwestern United States, while the Manfreda is a genus of flowering plants in the Asparagaceae family.
The cross between these two plants resulted in the creation of the Mangave, which combines the best qualities of both parents. The Mangave has inherited the sturdy structure and winter hardiness of the Agave, as well as the interesting leaf shapes and colors of the Manfreda.
The first Mangave hybrids were developed by Hans Hansen, a plant breeder from the United States. He started crossing Agave and Manfreda in the early 2000s to create new and striking varieties. Through selective crossing and breeding, he managed to produce a wide range of Mangave varieties, each with its own unique characteristics.
The Mangave has since become popular among succulent plant enthusiasts for its striking appearance and easy care. It is a versatile plant that can be grown indoors or outdoors and requires little maintenance.
Today there are numerous varieties of Mangave available, each with its own colors, patterns and shapes. The history of the Mangave is therefore relatively recent, but the plant has quickly won a place in the hearts of plant lovers all over the world.
Mangave was specially selected for Nelumbogarden by Matthijs Hazeleger.
